One trick to finding cheap flights is to travel during shoulder season (period between low and peak season) During this time you can avoid paying for expensive flights, hotels, experience less crowded tourist attractions and also go during a time where you can still experience good weather!
From Australia, for example when flying to experience the European summer, shoulder season falls during mid May-June or late September to end of October. If you were flying to North America/Canada to experience the early ski season, shoulder season falls between mid November to early December. For flights to the Pacific (like Fiji), the shoulder season falls during March & November.
